According to popular Hindu folklore, the Mithila Kingdom in northern Bihar faced a devastating famine. The king, Janak, consulted with sages who advised him to appease Indra Dev, the Hindu god of rain.
Following their counsel, he began to plough the barren lands. While ploughing, his tool struck something hidden in the soil. Upon digging further, he discovered a golden vessel containing a small baby girl.
Believing this to be a divine blessing, he adopted the child and named her Sita. Because she was the daughter of King Janak, she is also referred to as Janaki or Jankanandini.
