End Of An Era: Mumbai’s Beloved Irani Café B Merwan & Co Shuts After 112 Years

Mumbai's Iconic Irani Cafe B Merwan & Co

Mumbai – when the city is mentioned, places like Juhu Beach, Marine Drive, and the CSMT station instantly come to mind. Beyond its iconic architecture and scenic coastline, Mumbai is also known for its special bakeries that evoke a sense of nostalgia, whisking us back in time. Unfortunately, this nostalgic era is facing an end with the closure of B Merwan & Co, a famed bakery that has served delicious mawa cakes, buns, and puffs for 112 years.

Situated on Grant Road in South Bombay, the news of this beloved Irani café shutting down emerged after a Facebook post by Zoroastrian Heritage shared a photo of a notice on the café’s shutter.

Renowned for its mawa cakes, which sell out quickly, the café has been a beloved spot with its charming wooden tables, distinct Irani chairs, and red-checkered tablecloths. Founded in 1914 by Boman Merwan Nazarabadi, an immigrant from Iran, the café became a cornerstone for Mumbaikars, offering a unique experience that stood against the tide of change in the city.

The closure of B Merwan & Co symbolizes not just the end of a café but highlights the forces shaping Mumbai’s evolving culinary landscape. As we bid farewell to another cherished institution, we reflect on what made such places so unforgettable.
